| The Dog - A brief history |
 |
40-50 million years ago lived the earliest known carnivores, known as CreodontsFrom these creatures evolved the Miacid, from which dogs, bears and weasels most likely descendedThese creatures branched into separate identities, one of which was the Hesperocyon (first seen in North America) and is thought to be the direct ancestor of the dog family, living around 30 million years ago
The dog lineage continued through Tomartus, who had the beginnings of modern dog’s ear and tooth anatomy, and then Canidae, the modern dogs we know today, including wolves, foxes and jackals.
Today there are around 41 million pet dogs in Europe and more than 60 million pet dogs in the United StatesAlong with cats they have remained the worlds favourite choice of companion and work colleague for centuries.
“Dogs play such an important part in our lives today and have become instilled as ‘one of the family’ and our most trusted and personal friendsHaving a dog however is a lifetime commitmentTo ensure their happiness and healthiness it is our responsibility to provide for them; ensuring their general welfare, a correct and nutritious diet, sufficient regular exercise, enjoyable interaction, and an understanding of their medical needs and their behaviour.”
“As well as the many physical and psychological benefits owning a dog has proven to have on people, dogs provide us with loyalty, companionship, love and affectionThe least we can do in return is to keep them in the best of physical health and psychological happiness.” |
